Search Engine Optimization should play a major part in the planning of any website. The sooner you incorporate SEO into your website, the better.

Domain Name:

Search engines do take into consideration keywords in the domain name. Register a domain name containing your most important keywords. But also take into consideration avoiding large and difficult to remember domain names. Avoiding this you will have repeat-visitors to your site and that means free traffic to you as well. Also there is another approach like getting a unique domain name, a good example is this: Googlelady :)

Structure of your site:

Make your site easy to read and easy to find information. It does not matter how great your content is, if your visitors have problems or get frustrated trying to find the information they are searching for you lose the game. Also it is vitality important that webpages are linked in such a way that it maximizes the Google Pagerank of each webpage, because the rankings of each page depends on it.

Design of your site:

Never use Flash. Search engines rely on the keywords of your site, and flash used for entertainment and lack of content (Keywords). Stick with HTML or you can use any other languages/CMS like Wordpress, ASP, Cold Fusion, PHP, etc.. To build your website.

Site Navigation & usability:

The best way to get all your pages indexed is to lead spiders to all the major areas of your site. To do this, some SEO experts recommend site map. Also if you have a blog try to link your oldest article to the newest one (Try to do this keeping the same subject).

With Web 2.0 I always recommend any business/company/personal sites to use Blogs! Yes Google loves blogs as well as Googlelady :D
I have a tip for a company: Create a blog, link it to your main site and then in the blog try to make your customer feels that they are important updating your blog so they can gain trust at the same time you are applying some SEO techniques that may help your main site.

Here is an example from Aaron Wall’s the effect of improving Internal Navigation & Usability:

One client of mine only ranks below his official manufacturer for their name. His site had inadequate internal navigation. I took a day to improve the navigation, and the result was a 150% increase in sales. The last 8 days of last month sold nearly as much as the rest of the month combined. His business model looked like it was about to die, but that one day of work made it functional for at least a couple more years.

Categories:

Do a research in your niche and see what people search about your niche. Did you know that people do a specific search more than a general one? For example if someone is searching for a camera product they may add “Canon camera” instead of “Camera products”. Try to attract those people creating a resource about it. You should create categories that cater to both these type of search engine users.

Content:

The content of your site is the most important aspect of search engine optimization. That’s why I will just add an example what it can hurt you and then will try to make an article about how to make good content. By the way, in Short good content is the little word UNIQUE.

  • A webpage has no text whatsoever, as in the case of some Flash pages. Search engines will not find any keywords to index.
  • A webpage contained lots of text, with dozens of different keywords on different topics. Search engines would find it difficult to categorize the page, as there are simply too many competing keywords.

Great tips. Another forgetful SEO magic is the one often people forget implementing, the alt=”" in images, because it’s so tedious, especially when applying to multiple images.

So many of us just start up a blog or site without preparing for what is really involved , the time, dedication and just old fashioned hard work. My Alexa rank just went under 1 million today and I started in August. Still in the learning curve , but staying the course!
