Did you thought about it? Buying domain names for your children? Thinking about it is a must nowadays, there are many people that check if the domain name of your child name is still available and then register their names based on what domain names are available.

Here is an interesting post about how John Chow choose his child name:

Sally Chow was born on September 9th. When choosing her name, we went through all the normal methods, like reading baby name books and checking out sites that list names. However, one of the things I did before even considering a name was to check to make sure the domain for the name was available. If it wasn’t, I didn’t consider it.

Also there is an interesting discussion going on webmaster world: Domains for your children

Sure, it’s a good idea and, perhaps a nice gift, to register your child’s name as a domain name.

Have you done that? If not, do it.

Did you stop there? Maybe you should pause to ponder the role of the WWW in your child’s future.

What about their favorite hobby, pasttime, talent? Might it be natural for your child to someday want to have a website or blog about their favorite activity? Perhaps in the future (like now) kids won’t be flipping burgers at Mickey D’s or delivering newspapers, like I did when I was 12. Maybe they are future affiliate marketers? At least for making money for car insurance . . .?

What about their career? Are your children of the age where they are talking about a career path or career ideas? Might you do some good by picking up a domain or two related to their possible career interests?

I know. Things change so you don’t know for certain what domains to register and you might not know what domains to register for a 2 year old. Still, if you register a domain that’s not your kid’s love later in life maybe someone else might someday inquire and reimburse your costs.

While you are busy encouraging your children to study hard and all that other stuff you do as a parent you might consider whether having the right website name - today, in 2007 - might afford him or her a bit of a marketplace advantage later in life - in next year.

Domains for kids: It’s not just about the names your chose for them.

You gave a really good idea and I searched for my child’s name +.net and it’s available… but before going for purchase I just want to be guided whether buying .net is a good idea… frankly I got my domain a .net since .com was not available then I thought asp.net vb.net jalaj.net…

I read you other posts detailing why you should buy .org and other for why not .info. what do you think about .net

.net is compared to .com in SEO terms and my personal opinion I see .net like .com in all the ways. If your name is not available for .com go for .net is the best solution.

    Yes… no choice…
but for those with choice always go for .com…
only a few successful sites are .net for ex. php.net, problogger, sourceforge.

I overheard someone explaining internet address as something starting with www and ending with .com ( so mine is not :( )

Jalaj, in few years you will also hear about some new extensions. The .com is the first extension that was out then .net came. Talking about “levels” .com and .net are pretty close.
