Adwords Content Network: useless?

When I first started adwords I have been fooled by Google with the default settings that they have, enabling the content network to run your ads. I was bidding from $0.5 to $3 per keyword but what I did wrong is not disabling the content network. After 5 hours, I was excited to check what type of results I got. My surprise! I spent a lot of money (was a lot of money for me as a starter). I checked the statistics of my Adwords account and 90% of the money spent there were from the Content Network. With a ROI almost 0%. That was really frustrating! From that day till now I lower my bids in the content network for only $0.05 per click, if I get clicks from there OK! But if not, much better. Sometimes I disable this option.

I am not saying that there are not good content network sites out there. Yes, there are a lot but all depends on what type of niche you are advertising. From my experience, if you want to advertise in Content network ads you will do better if you specify which site you want to show your ads. Test them one by one and see if it is worth the money you are spending there.

You’re absolutely correct that Google AdWords (and the other PPC engines too) default to content on and for most advertisers content almost never converts. You are also correct that there could be specific sites that would work really well for your niche so locating and targeting them could be very beneficial.

I have a post specifically with additional details called .

I have never had much joy from the content networks, and now always stop my ads being shown on the content network.

I am now sure what types of site would work well on the content network and how best to utilize them. I am sure that there are people that are making it work for them and it would be interesting to hear from them as to how they are making it work.
