Google Rumors: Google PageRank To Be Reset

Google PageRank To Be Reset
During a recent meeting with a Google engineer it was revealed to me that during November Google plan to make changes to four elements of their search engine and AdSense program in an attempt to thwart the increase of blackhat SEO, PR fraud and invalid AdSense clicks. (This is just a rumor)
PageRank to be reset to zero and replaced
The infamous PageRank (PR) is going to be no more. All toolbar PR data will be reset to zero and PR will never be coming back (this is why we have been waiting so long for the update). This is very bad news for anyone who sells text links in order to make money.
This will be done in time for a mid November release of the Google Toolbar version 4.2 which will be used to roll out “VR” (visitor rating). Google VR™ will use a digg like system with a voting button on the toolbar to collect visitor ratings of the page and the VR will be displayed via a blue bar similar to the PR bar. The VR value will be based on a number of factors like the ratio between visitors and votes and where your visitors come from (i.e referred from a site or a search engine), It will also take in to account how many people return to your site over time. I was assured that measures will be in place to stop competition rigging your VR by giving you too many negative votes.
Two clicks for AdSense
With the increase of click fraud and invalid, unintentional clicks, Google are bringing in a system designed to prevent someone clicking on an advert unless they actually want to. The system they are implementing will mean when someone clicks on your AdSense ads a box will appear telling them that the link they just clicked is a PPC advert and it will ask them if they want to visit the sponsored link. if they click “yes” you get paid, If they click “No” you don’t get paid. It is speculated that this will reduce all AdSense earnings by 75% across the board but will increase the CPC.
No more link: data on the operator search
The link operator on Google search has long been an inaccurate way of seeing how many backlinks you have (another important factor when selling text links), But we don’t have to worry about that anymore because Google are removing all backlink data from the search engine and from Google webmaster tools and analytics.
rel=”nofollow” replaced by rel=”dofollow”
Not to long ago Google came out with the great idea of using a rel=”nofollow” attribute for links. What this done was tell the Google bot what links you didn’t want it to follow from your site. This was a great way of stopping comment spam on blogs. Unfortunately not many people used the rel=”nofollow” attribute and it kind of died out. So in november Google are replacing it with a rel=”dofollow” attribute which will tell the Google bot what links you DO want it to follow. It will simply ignore all links with no attribute or the rel=”nofollow” attribute, it will only crawl rel=”dofollow” links. All links you have earned up to this point are now worthless.

Stumbled. Do you really think this will render all old links useless?
By the way-picked up one of those YSM $200 search credits from you recently.
THANK YOU! You Rock!

Is it april 1st or something?
October 29th, 2007 at 6:43 pm
Hey Denver I will tell you a BIG THANK YOU. I love when someone stumble my articles! About the old links useless we have to wait you can expect from Google everything (pagerank update was one of them). About the YSM, I am really happy that you got it because yahoo have deleted them (the $199 vouchers).
Wesley, lol I don’t think so or hmmm they have changed the date?

If some of these are true. It’ll be a breath of fresh air. Now, if only ICANN went ahead and reseted all domain names. There’s a thought.
Regarding the topic, the two-click Adsense will hinder Adsense as a PPC model. Google already has its logo stamped on adsense ads stating that it’s an ad, on top of that telling visitors (again) that what they’re about to click an ad just seem excessive.
Google VR sounds promising.

Hey Domtan that was my thought about Google VR as web 2.0 works like this may be Google will go ahead to convert his ranking (part of the ranking system) to a web 2.0.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:16 pm
I think the rumour might be true, as I check some of the web site backlink is no follow, but surprisingly many of the PR4 web site still get a PR4!
This means nofollow is actually following, but less important..
If Google cancel PR, I think many people will turn to Alexa as the main method to evaluate their successness in SEO!

will this affect serps ? how sad pr is gone now
October 30th, 2007 at 2:33 am
google VR, will hard, will google going to aply membership for rating?.
thats is so impracticle
October 30th, 2007 at 2:49 am
@PageRank to be reset to zero and replaced - Might be largely true…
@Two clicks for AdSense - Don’t think would happen, at least not with increased PPC rates…
@No more link: data on the operator search - That would be painful if it happens… I use webmasters tools to see my blog’s standing.
@rel=”nofollow” replaced by rel=”dofollow” - Don’t think would happen as it will mean that Google still want webmasters to play links game though with changed rules! proposing nofollow was okey and followed by the world but a new proposal! Google doesn’t make rules for the internet!!
October 30th, 2007 at 4:42 am
yes,jalaj is correct!
google dont want their customer gone only because ‘Two clicks for AdSense’,its more hard and event visitor lame to click twice
October 30th, 2007 at 7:38 am
There’s too much changes and I don’t think I am able to live in this brand new Google world if they force me too hard. The same will go to others, most of the webmasters and services are likely to depend on Google as the standards raised are simple too high in a short time if all of it happens in lets say, one year.
@ PageRank to be reset to zero and replaced
I guess the whole system will be something like the Stumble Upon valuation system right? I installed a Stumble Upon toolbar but not the Google toolbar. This will make the whole Interesting.
Two clicks for AdSense
I find this acceptable as well because if I really want to click, I would have click it twice. Also, since the rate paid will be higher, I guess most publishers that have targeted visitors will earn lesser but not to the extent of not earning anything.
No more link: data on the operator search
I still have Yahoo. No sweat.
rel=”nofollow” replaced by rel=”dofollow”
This might cause us some chaos at the start but over the long run, links that are being placed might have a automated “rel=”dofollow”" since this was the rule. Just a few more characters to type.
I still don’t think Google should not introduce so much changes in one shot.
October 31st, 2007 at 6:07 am
Yes, truly, I also had noticed changes is PR, but I think VR will rock, it will be a challenge for professionals as well.
@PR
I guess Google is revising the whole system after the hot discussion on “Paid links are evil” in SES. VR will really a great boost to quality search of google.

PR Reset: I would love PR to go away. Requiring people to use a toolbar to create rank for a site will put Google Rank in the same boat as Alexa: USELESS.
Two-Clicks for AdSense: Well, they are buying “Double-Click”, right? This will not stop people from scamming AdSense.
No More Link Data: Meh.
rel=”dofollow”: Uh, that would destroy Google’s search because if no one uses nofollow why would they suddenly go back and add dofollow to all of their links?
October 31st, 2007 at 11:11 am
I can’t see all these changes happening at once. Google seem very focussed on familiarity with their product. They have not for example tried to follow the trends of more interactive ways of searching. Google has such a large market share that I can’t see them wanting to rock the boat too much. At least this has got us all talking and thinking though!
October 31st, 2007 at 6:48 pm
I don’t care what they do with PR. However, I am very concerned about this double click on Adsense thing. If that’s true, this will only punish those of us who work really hard on our content and monetize our content with Adsense ads. I’ll have to wait and see how it affects my earnings, but if my earnings go down even just 10% or 15% I will stop using Adsense and use YPN or Adbrite or one of the many alternatives. I can imagine many bloggers and websites would do the same. Will having to click twice deter real users from clicking those ads? We’ll have to see. It certainly won’t stop the click fraud though, not by a longshot.

Of the rumours outlined above, the Google VR sounds the most plausible. It’s certainly something I’ve been making enough noise about for quite a while.
It’s even quite timely given the also-rumoured Maka-Maka social networking stuff, too…
November 1st, 2007 at 6:27 am
Many changes will make the i-net messy. Since lot of webmaster and blogger depend too much on google, there will be a great revolution happening if google insist to remove PR and Changing Adsense system.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that I’ve stumbled, dugg, and sphunn this post. Good luck!

It’s time for Google to give PR a long break and start looking towards Web 2.0. It’ll be big challenge though for professionals to start afresh. This is defiantly going to bring drastic changes in SERPs..

Hey Ken Xu, This post is dedicated to you as well http://www.googlelady.com/518/big-month-october/ I wrote it yesterday but published today.

I don’t believe any of it sorry

“Google VR™ will use a digg like system with a voting button on the toolbar to collect visitor ratings of the page and the VR will be displayed via a blue bar similar to the PR bar.”
This sounds a lot like Alexa where the only sites that will get positive votes will be the ones in internet-related fields where visitors have actually bothered downloading the toolbar or even know what it is.
As an Adsense publisher, the Adsense double-click just sounds terrifying, heh. One wonders if they’ll apply that to their search engine listings as well, which my non-techy parents click on without ever realizing they’re ads (as if anyone reads those light gray, inconspicuous “sponsored links” small print tags).

November 2nd, 2007 at 12:14 pm
Wait, I’m confused. I read this same story at the Google Rumor Mill only it was posted more than a week before yours. http://googlemill.blogspot.com/2007/10/google-pagerank-to-be-reset.html
So, did YOU have the meeting with Google or did Matt have the meeting with Google?
November 2nd, 2007 at 12:36 pm
Hey Aahz I received an email from one googlelady’s readers with the content of this and it seems that he didn’t mentioned where it came from. So I think you did it and it came from the source that you told me. I will add it on the article and next time, any reader that send me an email with an article on it please let me know the source
And about your question, I don’t think neither matt or anyone spoke with google engeneering this is just a “Rumor”
November 7th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Very intresting rumors
November 12th, 2007 at 3:48 pm
You forgot the other obviously Google rumors such as
“Page Rank” is going to be renamed “Turkey Value”.
Backlinks are now going to be used against you.
Google will 301 to Yahoo search results.
My rumors make about as much sense as yours.

Re nofollow dofollow - I can’t see that happening - every website in the net would need to be updated!! - half the best ones would disappear and the spammers would dive right in the next morning and make things even worse - my 2 cents

Just a question - why do you say “Google are…”?
The first time I thought it was a typo - the second time I thought a trend. I know “Data are…” but, “Google are…”?
It’s not, Ford are… or Microsoft are… or General Electric are…
I are curious.
Maybe I’m just a new reader and missed an old article somewhere.
