What’s the “next big thing”?
November 13, 2007
There is a user in Webmaster World forum, which seems very sad to their failing in opening the “next Big thing” on the net. Here is what he said:
I think I can honestly say that I have tried… everything. For many years now, even before year 2,000, I have tried to make it on the WWW. I have been very honest and also explored the blackhat world. I failed doing both.
I don’t quite know why, since I really understand the technology and I consider myself as a person having “good taste” in general. I suspect some things:
* Simply too much competition. Everything has been done, and people don’t care about quality but quantity. If you’re first, you’re set.
* Lack of funds. I have no contacts/friends or money to shell out on advertising.
* All good domain names are registered. Finding a good .com domain is like trying to find and buy a green hill in cental Manhattan, NY for $1… damn near impossible. This day, I killed my last project. I am now very cynical and sad. I don’t feel like trying all over again, as I know my site will go ignored. It seems like I have tried every kind of site out there… but they already existed. I just “perfected” the concept (and they went ignored).
Maybe, just maybe I could come up with something unique. But what would that be? And why would you tell me if you knew?
In either case, I’m gonna try now. Please tell me anything. Any ideas that haven’t been done. Preferarly primarily non-content, service-based ideas. Preferarly global in nature, or at least not too niched.
What do you miss from the WWW which could actually stand a chance when the author is broke? I only have my skills to work with.
I don’t expect anyone to hand me the solution to my problems, but I suspect there are some good pointers out there I haven’t considered.
Please help a desperate soul.
When you said that there is simply too much competition, that is right there are many new websites poping up and many “new” projects poping up. But when you talk about “next big thing” it should be original and unique so there will not be any competitor. No one is saying that you can’t make for example a project in a high competetive niche and succeed, but it will take time if you don’t have the right budget.
Patience is the tool that can make you succeed in any project. There are many webmasters that think if I open ‘many’ projects in one time (I do it sometimes when I get bored with some old projects) will succeed inmediatly. That is a wrong thought and I am talking from experience. Open a “project” (can be a website, an e-commerce or a blog) and focuss on it, make it happen, make it succeed and then move on your next project. If you got bored with your project then you are doing what most webmasters do, they don’t open what they love or they are appasionated about.
Domain names can help you make money online or can help you rank well in search engines but that is not the only factor to get well ranked. A good example is this domain name: Googlelady.com. What do you think I will be ranked well? With the keyword Googlelady? No, if you check Googlelady is well ranked in many keywords.
It is true that something unique can be the next “big thing” but if you don’t apply the following factors it will not matter if it is unique or not, you can even succeed with a project that is already in the market (can be a product, service, blog, anything..):
- You have to be patient, the internet is getting bigger and bigger and it will be more difficult to succeed.
- Open something that you are appasionated about (You really love), If you open a project just because it makes money, you will not succeed.
- Make a plan for your “next big thing”, every project/business that have no plans it will not succeed. If you don’t know how to make a plan, at least set your goals.
- Re-Invest: That was my first problem when I started to make money online. I did not re-invested in my online business and all the profits was in my bank account. This is one of the major problems that most of webmasters or bloggers do they are afraid to spend what they have earned online.

I had to go look up this thread because I wanted to see how other people responded. You are right, patience and passion are key. It’s hard to be patient when you have no passion for what you are doing.

yes everything has been tried. so why not try something that has already been successful and go where the money is. very few of us will discover the next big thing. your best bet is to take a big thing and make it better, find a unique way of doing it, cover it etc. the majority of people who made money in the gold rush were not the prospectors, they were the ones who provided services to them.

Patience, and passion are two things one must have to make it in anything business, relationships, sports the list goes on.Without the two working hand in hand it will be difficult. No successful business has been born overnight. It takes time, and effort.

I heard that wiki’s were going to be the next big thing. Like the one buck wiki and such. Passion is a key for many aspects of your blog or site. And it is a ton of work, and I am willing to wait. Well I am giving this web site or my blog a year to see what happens or where it goes. Worst case for me is you can find out lots of information about an artist you never new exsited, and have some interested reads.

Your fourth Tip is my favorite Reinvest that is key to go big. If you don’t reinvest into your online business it will die soon. That’s what most common mistake every online entrepreneur makes. Thanks for sharing.
