Google Adsense SmartPriced Revealed
November 25, 2007
If you are active in a forum that have a Google Adsense category and asked “why my adsense earnings are going down” you may readed that you get “smartpriced”. SmartPriced was created by Google to tell you that you have been “kind of” penalized in Google Adsense dropping your earnings per click. But there are many other definitions from webmasters about smartpriced:
Definition #1
It means, if you talk about photography, and somebody clicks an ad about digital cameras, you get smart priced on that click because your sites not about that.
If it was a click on an ad about photography you should get a non-smart-priced click.
Now, this means that google has to “understand” what your site is about, and many people have concern about using many sites with 1 adsense account.
Lets say you have 2 sites.
One about Digital Cameras and one about Photography, where would you be then? Does google know your site as a “digital camera site” or “digital photography site”. Thats not awful, but imagine your dealing with 2 different ends of the spectrum, then that can be a concern.
I really can’t agree with that definition. If someone really understand the way the ads display they will not follow this definition. An example search for: “webhosting” check the ads on Google. Then search for “coupon codes” you will see some ads about “webhosting coupon codes”. That means that Google put a cookie in your computer that tells them that you are searching for “webhosting” and then they match “webhosting” with your next keyword search. The samething happen when you hit a site with adsense.
Definition #2
A person who has been Smart-priced will have an experience similar in feeling to one who has dropped their soap in prison.
Avoid it at all costs. Try to make pages that help sell the product for the advertiser, so the “prospect” is warmed up and ready to become a customer.
That’s how to avoid SmartPricing. Put “Buy Now” somewhere on the page, in a proper context.
Something similar of what I said, but I believe that the “Buy Now” has nothing to do. But you can test it and see if it works.
How to Avoid SmartPriced
Google Adsense was created to attract more adwords advertisers and then spend more money on the content network. But to attract more adwords advertisers they have to see the ROI on the content network. For that reason, Google created this word smartpriced so they will not have to use “penalized” or “non-quality site for buyers”. If you really want to avoid Smartpriced you have to create content that makes your readers buy the product or make a lead.
Get People to your site that usually buy products. The top shoppers are from US and Canada depending on the product. So you will tell me how Google knows that this person is a shopper and not a clicker or just a reader? Simply, from their Cookies.
Long ago, I was doing a research with a fake adsense account. The first day I clicked once in my ad the earning per click was $0.07 (The site was just to test things out with the fake adsense account). Then to apply this theory I came the next day and bought a hosting account and some other services that I needed and then after the cookies was placed on my computer (In english words: I have bought products over the net) I went to my “research” site and clicked once again.
For my surprise, I earned from that click $16.4. I know that this is unbelievable but that’s true. To really avoid and earn big checks from adsense you have to attract buyers no matter if they buy when they click. Remember Google reads cookies from people that click your ads (and also from you as a google searcher).
- If your niche is just to give information and you are sure that you will not attract buyers you can filter some ads like those that have “clickbank” which the only purpose is to sell a service/product. This may help you to prevent or get out of smartpriced.
- Filter MFA (Made For Adsense sites); with an adsense preview tool you can check which sites are MFA (those that have an article and a bunch of adsense ads (useless sites))
- Quality traffic really matters. Do not buy bulk traffic or autosurf kind traffics. Those are garbage traffic and can affect your site
- Rank Well in Google. This is the best quality traffic that you can get (from organic results).
If I want to succeed with Google Adsense I have to work hard like I do as an Affiliate Marketer and that’s one of the reasons I prefer not using adsense. I prefer to advertise a product that give me a flat-commision or % per sale/lead.
Anyone asked “Why Google do not reveal what is really smartpriced?” or “How you can avoid being smartpriced?”. Because if all webmasters know about this issue they will “play” the system.

“SmartPricing” is just Google way to reduce paychecks. Those hit by it, if genuine, would report to get corrected price. Others who are guilty of breaking a rule or two will keep mute.

The part where the author says that Google tracks cookies and accordingly pays for the click is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard and is absolutely not true.
