Unboxing the Everex $200 Linux Computer
November 16, 2007
This time Matt Cutts an engeneering from Google have posted something that I was searching for, how it looks the gPC and after saw those amazing pictures I will definitevely buy one january next year and see how it looks like. My main reason to buy a gPC is because they use Linux which I love and I believe is the best (in Security terms). Here are some pictures that Matt has shared:
First, the box. The “gPC” stands for Green PC, not Google PC as some people have thought:
When you open the box, you’ll find a pretty flyer on top of the PC:

Here’s what the flyer looks like in more detail. For people that have never seen Linux, the flyer is a great little introduction:

For $199.00, I was expecting a barebones machine, but it comes with a PS/2 keyboard, mouse, and even USB-powered speakers:

The front of the machine looks like a standard computer. You can see the DVD-ROM drive, speaker and microphone jacks, and two USB ports. There are also two silver buttons for power and reset:

The back of the PC is pretty standard:

Google have been smart to launch this new pc before Black Friday which will bring many customers for sure! Do you think this will affect the Computer market? Do you think that this will cause other pc’s companies to lower their prices? Would like to see the reaction of Microsoft…

This pc is a great deal for someone looking to spend less this year on a new pc.
I like the way it is loaded with the linux kernel instead of the windows operating system.
As far as other pc makers lowering prices because of it I doubt it will affect the market much since it is a linux ran model. The majority of people have never ran a
linux based system, and will stay with windows.
This is a good buy for the money, and I am thinking of purchasing one myself.

I am a big Linux fan (and user of course) but I’m still skeptical as how it will be received by the mainstream market.
Nothing against Walmart customers but my guess is that many of them don’t even have a clue about what is Linux…

well, there goes my idea. thanks google.
I have been using linux for awhile, mostly kubuntu and gentoo distros, and this is great. I was waiting for a company to move their operating system to linux and distribute.

I applaud them for trying it, but these Linux PCs always seem too far ahead of their time. Most of the people that buy them don’t realize that they are not Windows, so then they get upset when they can’t run most apps on them. But, I suppose if enough companies continue to push Linux desktops, it will eventually take. (At least I hope so)
