How are your sales on Holiday?
December 7, 2007
I was searching about Holiday season sales as an affiliate marketer. I thought that this holiday season/Shoppers day (which have been passed; blackfriday, cyber monday, halloween, etc..) will be better than this. Then came in my mind that I was not promoting the right products or may be I am doing something wrong (yes, after those long years into this business). Then tried to find out what is going on, and see that there is no problem but many affiliate marketers are asking the same: “Why my sales have been lowered comparing to the last year”.
My thoughts was that there are many affiliate marketers promoting the same product and may be this is one of the reason (Indeed I still think this is one of the reasons) but then found a interesting paragraph:
According to statistics released by the Hong Kong government, exports to the US declined by 4% in the third quarter because of weakening demand. The 4th quarter is likely to be even worse.
Hong Kong is the preferred transit port for a lot of Chinese made products. Therefore if you are in the US, you should brace yourself for a bad christmas season. Many manufacturers in Hong Kong are worried that the US is about to enter a recession. If the feds reduce interest rates again, all hell could break lose with the US dollar. Our own sales to the US has more or less collapsed. In fact, we are planning to get out of e-commerce altogether soon.
So it seems that the US dollar is affecting affiliate marketers as well and not just e-commerce and google adsense publishers. From what I saw also adsense publisher have seen a drop in their adsense earnings in the holidays (those adsense publishers that promote products).
Some testimonilas with the same problem:
traffic doubled - tripled
conversions and volume seems to be very late in the pickup, somewhat eerie…
daylight savings being a week late; thanksgiving being a week early, the mild weather all over the country, and concerns/hesitations about the future economy seem to all, in combination, created a scary slow start
we sell unique specialized gifts and this is the only time we actually make money.
however, the American way is all about froogle spending for christmas, its more justified in the weeks before xmas then in the months before if everyone isnt booming. this could mean an incredible intense 4 weeks before xmas given the incredibly slow start — the damand for xmas gifts doesnt lower simply because everyone is behind, or starting their shopping cautiously.
Yes, when things are slow this time of year and people wait until the last minute to shop, whatever the reason is, the internet does lose out, due to the fact of our shipping time delay, remembering a Xmas during the Bush Gore Election where there was a debate on who should be President in 2001, it really hit our business hard at the time, we lost most of our internet sales and our retailers didn’t sell their goods until the last week before Christmas.
But thank god that is not the case this year, It will start up a couple of days after Thanksgiving.
Look forward to the money, I hate all that extra freaking work…

I haven’t had one sale. I’ve tried a lot of different things to get people to shop on amazon, or some of my affiliate stores across other blogs, and nothing.

I’m doing some good trade in DVD’s for the mainstream online stores (Ebay, Amazon) but other than that things are a little slower than I was expecting.

I think people might be going back to basics. When you buy a house you want to actually walk in and look at it. Same, goes for jewelry (most of the time) and other products.
make sure your product your promoting is something people regularly buy online without the holidays coming around.
