Link Building: Top Commentator Strategy
February 20, 2008
If you are an active blog reader you already know the benefits that must bloggers says about having a top commentator plugin in their blog. For those that don’t know this plugin will list the top commentators in their blogs. For example in Googlelady.com you can see at the right-side of the blog the top 5 commentators with their respective names and links:

This is the best and easy way to build backlinks to your site for free, but is time consuming method. All depends how many active commentators the blog you are targetting. This plugin will list your site with the name that you have added when you comment as an anchor text with a do-follow tag. So search engines will see that link and follow it with a little link juice.

Problems
- Many webmasters do the same error always and use the same anchor text in every blog that they comment. My recommendation is to vary the anchor text in each blog or two.
- You are a top commentator in X blog for one month and you stop commenting there. To get the full effect on counting the backlink in search engines usually takes 3 months (I mean full 100%, you get 20% of the value in few hours to few days). So you will need to be an active commentator for at least 3 months better if you do it always. Linkage is also important so imagine being a top commentator (backlink) from your favorite blog for 1 year.
- Most of the bloggers show the top commentator in all their blog post and this can reduce the important backlink, sometimes a blogger makes a post with an off-topic and it can give you less link juice. That’s why Googlelady have the top commentator active only in the main site where the most of the backlinks that I get is to the main site. So what are you waiting to be my top 5 commentator (NO spam please).
Applying this link building strategy in your plan can be very usefull, if you don’t have time you can hire someone that can comment for you and tell him to not spam and make some usefull comments.
You will save a lot of money with this strategy, let’s make an example on how much you can save, check the advertising packages in googlelady. You see that adding your site as a text link ad in the right side will cost you $50 per month, now being a top commentator here you can save each month $50 bucks. Of course the traffic will vary because the ad is above the fold but still we are talking here in Link Building strategies and not traffic strategies. Also remember that googlelady is a trusted and authority site (since 2005).

I like to use the top commentator plugin to give some love back to my regular commentors. It’s like a thank you for reading and commenting on what I’ve been writing.

That’s right Steve but many people really don’t see the goodness. With Googlelady an authority site and easy to achieve (now) the top commentator is a bargain!

I’ll definitely do this strategy. I see my name on your top commentator list right now … but I don’t have a link back to a site yet. Next comment will definitely have one… Can I change the name to a keyword I’m targetting? Is it ok?

Yes Mel, it is ok. But sometimes the keywords akismet think that is a spam if this happens I will search in the spam section of akismet and approve it (the only thing that will take time). If you change the “keyword” you will have to comment a lot to get at the top, then when you are at the top use another keyword and do the same.

I have started using it. It really increase the participation in the posts. It is really a good way to say thank you. But you have to be certain that people somehow add value to the post and not just say “nice post” to each post and increase the count.

Thanks for this tip, Googlelady. I just wanted to say that the way page ranking and all that is going leaves very little on the table for those who’s background is not in computers and software. You say you have the top commentators only on your front page. For many of us, to make such appear on one page only in a blog is simply out of reach. We may manage HTML here and there but that is about it. Does that mean no hope for the non-IT blogger?

Yes, even right now I’m doing this for my blog. Good link building even can meet some friends that have same niche with us.
