The other day I wanted to advertise on a niche that is high competitive and the keywords were approx: $5-$6 per click, but I was feeling that taking that risk competing with some big companies is not worth, then I was thinking a way that I can advertise and make money in this niche and specific keywords and there were 2 options:

1. Search Engine Optimization: Optimize a site that will be targetted to that specific keywords but here is one main problem, it will take time. So this option was obviously a long process, so it came to my mind “Adwords Content Network”.

2. Adwords Content Network: To be honest I was not a fan of Adwords Content network, so I started to read the sections on Google Learning Center that talks about content network. It was obvious that this was very different from normal search and the ads will be very different to target each site.

I started my content network campaign like all of you do it, add some keywords, create some ads and push the save campaign button. I was receiving many impressions and few clicks and the conversion was very poor. I always read on related affiliate marketing forums and some people have been saying that they are making thousands in the content network, so there is a gold mine there!

I changed the ads, the keywords the landing pages. I tried all the tricks that was coming to my mind. Then I found a way to really make this work. I added the specific keyword that I want to advertise into Google and I went checking the first and second page of organic results and found that some of those sites have Google Adsense there… Aha!… I thought why not instead of adding my keywords on the list and Google decide in which pages my ads will be shown, I tell Google where I want to add my ads.

Here are the steps: (Note that this is an example of keyword and not the ones I wanted)

Step 1:

Go to Google.com and add the keyword that you want to advertise, check each site of the organic results, at the top sites will be better than the lower ones (Top 10). Then check if each site has adsense on it. Let’s say you found two sites at the top 10 that have the keywords that you want: www.xyz.com/somepage.php & www.abc.com/somepage.php

Step 2:

Then go to your Google adwords account and open a campaign for placement-targeted. You create the campaign and your adgroup and don’t forget which countries to choose. Then create you AD.

Step 3:

Now you have 3 options to choose: Browse categories , Describe topics and List URLs:

Browse categories : Select placements from topics like Games or Health.
Describe topics : Enter words (like tennis) or phrases (like Formula One racing) to see a list of placements matching those topics.
List URLs : Find out if specific websites are available on the Google Network, and see similar available placements.

You choose “List URLs” and add one of the sites that you found in step 1. In this example will be www.about.com/somepage.php or www.about2.com/somepage.php. Then Google will show the main root of the site, let’s say in this example: www.about.com

about

Step 4:

The problem of Google Adwords here is that it doesn’t show the exact page that we want to advertise ONLY. In this example your ad will be shown in all related pages of About.com but we don’t want that. We want to advertise in the exact page that you want (Because of your keyword and the search result that you found). This means that if About.com is at the top of the results (organic) in Google they will have your targeted audience for your product and for much less, how we can fix this problem? Here we go:

Now you choose CPM or CPC, first I will prefer to test this with CPC. And then hit continue. Set your pricing and save the campaign. Then go to that Adgroup and click on “Placement”:

Check on the site that you want to edit (this example: About.com) and click on “Edit Placements and Bids”.

Step 5:

Add the exact page there About.com/somepage.php and delete the root domain about.com then save changes. Now your ad will be showed just in the page that you wanted in step 1. Here you will save a lot of money because you are bidding practically at the top site which many people and customers will go there.

Thats really good point. Site targeted ads works better than just regular content ads based on “google targetted” pages.

Well, did it really work for you ?? Because as far as i know, if you are trying to advertise on popular sites, their eCPM is quite high.. lets talk about DigitalPoint Forum, their eCPM is about $35-$50 depending on what time are you placing the ads..

Hey Krunal, depends on the site for example DigitalPoint Forum you better choose CPC (site targeted), google now allows site targetted with Cost Per click and not per impression. Go and try it :)
