Ebay Banned Selling Digital Products
March 26, 2008
I am not a big fan of ebay but there are many fellows that make a living selling digital products on ebay. But from March 31, 2008 ebay is banning all Digital Products. Here is a brief email explaining why ebay is applying this new policy:
Hello…This is Brian Burke, Director Global Feedback Policy. Digital goods are often reproduced at little to no cost to the seller. On eBay, this creates the potential for Feedback Manipulation (both real and perceived). To preserve the integrity of the Feedback system, effective March 31 all goods that can be digitally downloaded or transferred electronically must be listed using the Classified Ads format.
Using the Classified Ads format, sellers receive a 30-day ad at a fixed price. This solution enables sellers to continue to market their digital goods on eBay; however, because Classified Ad listings are a lead generation tool and do not result in transactions that go through eBay, Feedback cannot be exchanged between buyer and seller.
Simply stated as of 31st March 2008 anyone selling digital items will be in violation of eBay’s policies.
This affects anyone selling items delivered digitally.
This can include:
eBooks
Photos
Audio/mp3
Graphics
Digital Videos
Websites
Domain Names
And any other digital services.
But what about the legit sellers that make a living selling digital products? This will impact many of you that are making a living online from selling digital products but now what? I know many domainers that put their domain names in ebay to sell them at a better price than other domain auction site.
What do you think will be the replacement for those digital products sellers?

I used to sell digital items on ebay. But i do not re list my items as they have to be listed in a new category. Many visitors are not aware of this category and for some time, many will not look into the new category. I think lot of users will stop using ebay because digital items are only allowed to sell through classified listing that is more costly than auctions. Anyway i will try classified listing after waiting some time to see how it works.

I’m sorry about the people who made a legit income from selling digital products on eBay, but I for one, am glad to see eBay is finally doing something about the eCrap peddlers. I was getting tired of shopping for computer parts, or ipods, and getting a good 50% of items being eBooks on how to buy these items for cheap.
On the other hand, I think eBay went a bit too far with the “Classified ads” model. They should have just confined digital goods into a separate category tree, but still give them the option of doing auctions and buy-it now. (And punish those who do not list in the proper category)
