Case Study: Hostgator The First Hosting Company
April 1, 2008
This post is part of my case study My Hosting Diary
The first hosting company that I want to try is Hostgator. Why I choosed hostgator as my first company in this case study? Because Hostgator is one of the biggest hosting companies in this industry and I have read many reviews about them and almost all are positive ones. I don’t know why but I have checked their forums and all the possible reviews from hostgator and from this reason I bought a 3-years contract.
What Package I ordered from Hostgator?
- I purchased the Baby Hosting Package
- 36 Months I purchased with them which cost: $286 but using their current Hostgator coupons LUCKY I got 20% (which expires in July 1, 2008) So paid: $228.96
Steps to order a Hostgator Account
Step 1:
Go to hostgator.com and then choose the package that you want. In my case I choosed the “baby” hosting package which gives:
Disk Space: 600gb, BandWidth: 6,000gb, Domains allowed: UNLIMITED and thats one of the reasons I choosed this package because I will host more than one site on that account. Of course I choosed the baby hosting package in Linux:

Step 2:
Then clicking on “order now” it will come the order wizard page which you choose if you want to register a new domain name with them or use a domain name that you already own.
TIP: Always use a domain name outside of your hosting account. Because many times there have been problems with hosting companies re-billing your domain name twice, or may be making it hard to renew your domain name. So I will recommend: Godaddy, Dotster, namecheap or Network Solutions.

Step 3:
Then the step 3 you will have to choose the package that you choosed, the coupon code if you have one and the Billing Cycle. In my case was 36 months and the coupon LUCKY to get 20% OFF:

Then press the “Calculate total” button:

I am a new customer so I choosed “I am a new customer” if you have an account with them you have to choose “add this order to my account”.
Step 4:
Then you will have a page to fill out your personal information with the payment method. There are two payment method one with Credit card and one with Paypal. Then after filling and submitting your order you will receive a welcome message saying that if you paid and the order is success you will have your account in 20 minutes. Less than 20 minutes (exactly 12 minutes) I received my hosting username, password and everything that I needed. Also they will give the DNS servers that you have to change in the registrar that you registered that domain. Very good automated system and was very smooth. A + point to Hostgator for that. Then I will need to wait 24 to 72 hours to propagate my dns and start using my hostgator account (Installing my new blog in that account).
Hostgator as an Affiliate
I have been an affiliate with hostgator long ago. I had no problems with them and they are very supportive. I ordered an account under my affiliate and they count it so it is $100 in commission. Let’s see if they will not reverse that commission.
Hostgator is the first company that I will test and I will keep you updated for the support service, quality hosting and everything that can happen (good or bad) with my hostgator account.

[...] Hostgator The First Hosting Company [...]

I’ve heard really good things about Hostgator, and I’ve referred some people to them as well through my affiliate link. It pays after 45 days 9they have a 45 days money-back guarantee,) and I’ve had no problems with them so far. Although I wish they’d offer higher commissions for larger orders.
On the hosting side, I saw that they still have cPanel 10, which is terrible. If they upgraded to automatic cPanel 11, I’d probably buy an account myself, but I really despise cPanel 10. I also wish they offered VPS, I’d buy that right now if it were a good price.
