This post is part of my case study My Hosting Diary With Hostgator

After 4 days ordering an account with Hostgator, I have received and email from Deven hostgator support, saying that I have to call to verify my account, if I am not able to call I can send a photo ID of the passport and a scan of my credit card. I can tell you that I was dissapointed because I don’t like to scan my credit card to a any company, but I understand about their anti-fraud security so I called them.

The first time I called that was a bad phone connection so it cut, then I tried again and happened the same thing, the third one and the last one I verified my account. They asked me about my name, last name, address, phone number, domain name and the last 4 digits of my credit card. After waiting a little bit they asked me to send them a scanned copy of my credit card. That was very dissapointed so I emailed them again saying that this is not my first time that I order a hosting account and if there is any problem I can call my bank and check if there is any problem with it. After few minutes with no questions, my account was verified and activated. Nice!

First Mini Hostgator review:

  • Their phone support is 24/7. So as an international customer I can call at my time without any problem a big Plus!
  • The last phone call duration was about 18 minutes. Too long for verification, but I prefer that than sending my credit card scanned copy.
  • Their email support is quite fast and very helpfull. Their team support is very big. A big Plus!
  • I don’t know what happened about different answers in the Phone and Email. But quite dissapointed that in the phone call they told me that I have to send them a credit card copy and after a few minutes got an email that my account is verified. But a big plus that they care about fraud over the net. There are many other hosting companies that don’t even bother to call you or verify your order ex: webhostingpad (watch out this hosting scam).

Now is time to install my blog in this new domain name keep in touch to see a guide on how to install wordpress in hostgator. You can check my previous post about this series of posts: Hostgator The First Hosting Company

I had the same issue with them , a typical case , and i would like to point to :

their anti fraud policy is not acceptable at all , what is meaning of scanning my id – which happened to be written in my local language – to get another request from them telling me to translate it ???? big laugh here

so i find it funny when you say :
big plus that they care about fraud over the net

if i’m going to translate it by myself for them , and suppose i’m intending to commit fraud , what is the point of this ridiculous policy .

Their phone support is 24/7 ??? great , then they left me listening to some recorded crap , costing me the value of 20 minutes call from the other side of the world …

and ….. exactly as they did to you , e-mailed me again asking for the same scanned documents , like there was no phone call at all , so its a repeated procedure they do to all , don’t know if that make them happy or what .

you say that Their email support is quite fast and very helpfull. Their team support is very big. A big Plus! ???? ha ha
no that isn’t right , at least in my case .

ok those were the negative points , which unfortunately exposed during the payment and purchasing their host plan , as for the performance of the server and support , i will wait for a next post about it to comment .
    best regards

Sherif, about the anti-fraud policy is a big plus of course, do you know that hosting companies are the most companies that got fraud orders? Do you know that if they pass a fraud order it can cost them A LOT of money if not banning their credit card payment processor? Unfortunetly, the fraud comes with international members like us.

About the phone support, I tested them in 3 different times in my zone, one in early morning, one in the evening and one at night time. All times they answered.

About their email support, they were very helpfull with me in those 6 emails that I exchanged with them.

I am sorry that this happened with you Sherif.

Are these verification issues meant to be for everybody or just certain countries? I’m from the UK and never had to verify anything with them. (I got the same hosting you went for- baby croc).
