This topic is high-discussed in major forums asking if to rank well in search engines the domain extension can play a major factor here? I always believe that domain names extensions are not main factors to rank well in Google. On 23 May, 2008 many webmasters at webmasterworld noticed a strange issue with Google that .info domain names *some* were dropped from their index and then came back.

This has happened to my .info domain since last night and I am really upset at it.

All my 300 keywords have stopped working in Google but my site still appearing in Google with site:www.example.info and www.example.info searches.

Yesterday I received 600 visitors from Google and today only 4.

My .info domain is one and half years old. Till, Today I regularly update it with unique content and don’t promote it much as I am already receiving number of visitors.. I never did spamming or adopted prohibited ways to promote the site.

I do Free directory submissions and very seldom links exchanges.

Can any expert tell me please what why it has happened to my site?

Is it a permanent problem or temporarily.?

I will be thankful for any help and guidance

I am sure that Google was updating their algorithm but Google or any other search engine will never block permanently a domain name extension.

Google has never penalized just because of a TLD - not for .info, not for .biz- not for any extension whatsoever. For Google to start doing that now would be a major shocker - and much too arbitrary. They don’t need to do things this way, because they actually can assess and rank any site and its pages rather well on its individual merits.

Whatever is going on right now for the .info sites that are seeing ranking drops, it’s 99.44% certain that Google is doing something other than penalizing for the TLD. We already have one .info site owner here reporting that top rankings for that site have been maintained - and I’m sure that’s what most .info domains are seeing.

After less than 24 hours, everything is back to normal. I am sure that this “change” of algorithm was to prevent some spammy sites (focussing on .info extension) to be ranked well. Did you notice that everytime Godaddy or Dotster have a .info special offer or coupon this happens? Also remember that the same Matt Cutts said that Summer was the preferred time for testing.

If you are new in this business and the domain name that you want (.com,.net,.org) is not available would you choose a .info? or may be .us.com domain extension?

I am just embarking on my niche sites journey and am starting to buy some .info domains as they are cheap to buy and I can just add them to shared hosting with no problem.

I have a .info that is over a year old and ranks pretty well in Google.
